19th Century Antique Flemish Carved Oak Mirror

Such a special piece and so incredible to find it in this condition! Usually saturated in a dark stain, this example of amazing craftsmanship is simply sealed in its natural oak colouring. Quite large too!

The symbolism is so rich and it really is a story within a frame. The carved faces are known as the 'Green Man' which were seen to represent new life that comes about every Spring. The men with trumpets are heraldic in nature. Therefore the whole narrative is very uplifting - the trumpets sound as a new beginning is celebrated. The rest is open for interpretation! How nice to look into the mirror each day and be reminded of a fresh start!

On the reverse of the mirror a date and place (Double Bay) indicate that it has been in Australia since the 60s.

Some aging spots and a scratch to the bevelled mirror. Mirror could be replaced or left to patina even further.
